SLE Scholars Experience Grantmaking

On Saturday, April 16, thirty college students who are part of El Pomar’s Student Leadership Experience gathered in Colorado Springs for the Spring Retreat, the third and final retreat the Scholars participate in as a part of the program.

Scholars in attendance had the opportunity to take part in a nonprofit board governance simulation, as well as distribute checks to the finalist organizations that were selected by the Scholars in a grantmaking process earlier in the year. The Scholars have been working with these organizations on projects throughout the year as a part of the program’s curriculum.

University of Northern Colorado Scholars (left to right) Katy Nikkel, Gena Sturgon, Lauren Koppel, and  Lexi Ververs posed for a picture with Gwen Schooley (far left), the executive director of A Kid’s Place in Greeley. A Kid’s Place was one of the finalist organizations selected by the Scholars and will receive a grant in the amount of $1,000.

The other two finalists were Crawford House in Colorado Springs and Posada in Pueblo.
