Journalist Experiences Hunger and Government Assistance Program Firsthand


Two months ago, Stephanie South, in a piece written about the underlying causes of hunger, spent time looking at how the issue is being addressed by nonprofit agencies and government assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), more commonly referred to as food stamps.  Only a little over two weeks ago, one journalist at the Colorado Springs Independent took on the Food Assistance Challenge and lived on the amount of money a SNAP participant is normally allowed per week—$35.40.
